How far back does the lookup work?
It is accurate for any date in the Gregorian calendar (1582 onward in most of Europe; 1752 for Britain and its colonies). Earlier dates are computed on the proleptic Gregorian calendar, which may differ from the Julian dates written in period documents.
Why does January 1 drift one weekday most years?
A common year is 365 days = 52 weeks + 1 day, so the calendar shifts one weekday per year, two after a leap year. That is why your birthday lands on a different day most years.
